~ Top 5 Saturday: Gift Books~

Top 5 Saturday is a weekly meme created by Mandy @ Devouring Books. Each week you follow the topic and list the top five books (they can be books on your TBR, favorite books, books you loved/hated, or anything others). You can see the upcoming schedule at the end of my post.

This Week’s Topic: Gift Books (Books you got as a gift, would give as a gift or have given as a gift.)

**Books on this list are in no particular order. You can click on their covers to access their Goodreads entries.**

1. Secrets of the Starcrossed (Once and Future Queen #1)

This novel was given to me by a friend after I mentioned that I received the second novel, Curse of the Celts, as an ARC read.

In a world where the Roman Empire never fell, two starcrossed lovers fight to ignite the spark of rebellion…

Londinium, the last stronghold of the Romans left in Britannia, remains in a delicate state of peace with the ancient kingdoms that surround it. As the only daughter of a powerful merchant, Cassandra is betrothed to Marcus, the most eligible bachelor in the city.

But then she meets Devyn, the boy with the strange midnight eyes searching for a girl with magic in her blood.

A boy who will make her believe in soulmates…

When a mysterious sickness starts to leech the life from citizens with Celtic power lying dormant in their veins, the imperial council sets their schemes in motion. And so Cassandra must make a choice: the Code or Chaos, science or sorcery, Marcus or Devyn?

2. The Selection (Selection #1)

This novel is one of the more borrowed ones by my friends, so I’ve given a lot of them copies so they can have their own.

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

3. Duchess If You Dare (The Maidens of Mayhem #1)

I was given a physical copy of this novel to participate in a blog tour. The author signed it and wrote a very sweet note of thanks and I cannot wait to get started on reading this.

From the glittering ballrooms of the ton to the city’s grittiest corners, London has no shortage of wrongs in need of righting—and the Maidens of Mayhem are prepared for the challenge. United by secrecy and sisterhood, these daring women from all walks of life aim to fight injustice wherever it takes them—even into the arms of unexpected love… These Regency Robin Hoods from USA Today bestselling author Anabelle Bryant are destined to storm into readers’ hearts!

Scarlett Wynn’s tragic childhood taught her that life can be cruel to women with little power. So when a local seamstress disappears, Scarlett vows to find out why. Armed with a weapon and her courage, Scarlett scours London for clues—and crosses the unlikely path of Ambrose Cross, the Duke of Aylesford, at an unlikely place: an upscale brothel. The Duke is trying to solve a mystery of his own, and Scarlett is sure they can help each other—if she can resist the attraction that draws them together…

As Duke, Ambrose is duty-bound to protect his family name from scandal, no matter the cost. But Scarlett’s fearless spirit forces him to look beyond his world of privilege. Scarlett is as intoxicating as she is dangerous, igniting a fire in him like no other. But when the pair learn both mysteries they’re trying to solve are tied to a string of missing women, the tangled scheme they uncover may put their lives, and their growing love, in mortal danger—and lead them to search their hearts like never before…

4. Love and Other Moods

Similar to Duchess, I also received a physical copy of this book for a blog tour. It is one that I’ve heard great things about and I cannot wait to read it!

Love and Other Moods is a coming-of-age story set in contemporary China, about falling in love, learning to adult, finding strength, and discovering one’s place in the world.

Naomi Kita-Fan uproots her life from New York to China when her fiancé’s company transfers him to Shanghai. After a disastrous turn of events, Naomi finds herself with no job, no boyfriend, and nowhere to live in a foreign country.

Amidst the backdrop of Shanghai welcoming millions of workers and visitors to the 2010 World Expo, we meet a tapestry of characters through Naomi: Joss Kong, a Shanghai socialite who leads an enviable life, but must harbor the secrets of her husband, Tay Kai Tang. Logan Hayden, a womanizing restaurateur looking for love in all the wrong places. Pan Jinsung and Ouyang Zhangjie, a silver-aged couple struggling with adapting to the ever-changing faces of their city. Dante Ouyang, who had just returned to China after spending years overseas, must choose between being filial and being in love. All their dreams and aspirations interweave within the sprawling web of Shanghai.

This multilayered novel explores a kaleidoscope of shifting relationships——familial friction, amorous entanglements, volatile friendships——in one of the most dynamic metropolises of the twenty-first century.

5. Outlander (Outlander #1)

This novel is another book that I have given to many friends. A lot of people I know loved the show, so I gave them a copy of the book so they can read the series that the show is based on.

The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord…1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE:

  • February 27th, 2021 — Snow on the Cover
  • March 6th, 2021 — Gift Books (Books you got as a gift, would give as a gift or have given as a gift.)
  • March 13th, 2021 —  Fire on the Cover
  • March 20th, 2021 — Love Triangle

For this week’s topic, I had a difficult time choosing how to create my list. Gift books could be ones that I got as a gift, ones that I would give, and/or ones that I have given as a gift. I tried to think of which of the three I would choose and was able to at least narrow it down to two. I chose two books that I have given to others multiple times and then three that I have been given recently. Although I have been given novels and have given novels to others thousands of times, I went with the novels that I thought of first and did not second guess once I randomly started typing in Goodreads.

    1. Personally I was not a fan of the first in the Once and Future Queen series, but the second more than made up for it and is worth a try to read! I absolutely loved the first Outlander book (and the series) and the other books/seasons are hit and miss, but I’m anxious to see how everything will turn out so I’m sticking with it until the end. (I know plenty of people, though, that love the entire series and books, so they would be a worth a try if you are curious.)
