~ This or That Book Tag ~

I actually saw this tag on The Reading Addict’s blog (an excellent blog to check out and follow, if you have not already)! I am not sure where this tag originated, but I will be happy to give them credit if I find out who created it. I thought this tag looked like fun and although I have a few other tags/awards to catch up on, this one required slightly less thought, so I decided to give it a try first.

Read on the bed or couch?

I do not have a preference between the two as I will read any place that I can. It also depends on the time of the day and also where I can have some quiet time to actually concentrate. Sometimes I choose to read on my chairs in my yard instead just to get some sunshine (if the weather holds out).

Read at night or in the morning?

For physical or ebooks, I typically get a chance to read them before bed, so these would be at night. For audiobooks, I listen to them while I am doing other activities during the day. Neither is a preference as it mostly is just when I have the time/opportunity to pick up a book.

Male main character or female main character?

I honestly do not have a preference if the main character identifies as male, female, or nonbinary. For me, it just matters if they are written well.

First person POV or third person POV?

9 times out of 10 I typically prefer first person POV. I love to get inside the character’s heads to see their thoughts and inner feelings. There are some novels that do not work well with a first person POV and benefit more from third person POV.

Trilogies or quartets?

There is no preference, as, similar to the above questions, it really just needs to be done well. I have been reading a little bit of everything lately with standalones, duologies, trilogies, and longer series. If a novel is entertaining, then it could potentially be 100 books long and still keep my interest.

Libraries or bookstores?

When everything was open, I preferred bookstores as I love to just hang out in their cafes or browse any new books for my collection. I actually have not been to a library in years, but I have been using my city’s digital library for a long time. Once everything is open fully again, I will be heading straight to the library, though, and just love being in the presence of multiple floors filled with books (my own Belle in Beauty and the Beast moment).

Books that make you laugh or cry?

I usually prefer books that make me laugh over those that make me cry, however, sometimes I am in the mood for a good emotional read, so I will pick one up that may or may not bring a tear to my eye.

Black book covers or white book covers?

The color of the book cover does not matter to me as long as it is aesthetically pleasing. My book shelves are all organized by author and, eventually, genre, so as long as the book looks nice on a shelf when it is not in use, then I do not care what color it is.

Character-driven or Plot-driven?

I have read both of these types of novels recently and it is very difficult to choose. However, I am leaning towards character-driven as a terribly written character can ruin a well-written plot, but a well-written character can distract from a poorly written plot. I know a plot or character does not have to be poorly written for a book to be driven one way or another, but this can happen in some novels that focus too much on one or the other. Some plot-driven novels tend to have characters make decisions solely based on the plot without any rhyme or reason and it can sometimes not make sense. On the other hand, a character-driven novel can throw in events that make no sense to the story, just to give the character some growth or to affect them in some way. The reader should journey along with the character and the plot is revealed as the journey moves forward taking you to an excellent conclusion.
