Last Year I Was Reading is hosted by Maria @ ReadingMaria. Every Thursday (or whichever day you choose), take your current read and compare it to what you were reading this exact time last year.
- Which one do you like better?
- What is different about the books?
- Any special facts/things you want to make note of or bring attention to?
For June, I am giving this new meme a try. I am temporarily putting a hold on my TBR Clean-up posts as it was difficult trying to go through and decide which books to toss. Since I love to do memes, I searched for some Thursday ones. This meme seemed to be interesting, so I decided to give a try this month. If it works, then I’ll work more with the formatting to make this post a more permanent fixture on my blog.
I read and reviewed this novel on June 22, 2020. This is the first novel in the Moose Springs, Alaska series. Although the date does not match exactly, it was the closest date last year as the next is on June 28th. I am very excited to read the fourth novel in this series when it is published in 2022!
In this post, I also included my latest read and reviewed novel, Three Dark Crowns (Three Dark Crowns #1) that I did earlier today.
Two of the four recent reads are contemporary romance novels while the other two, Three Dark Crowns and War Storm are fantasy novels that contain some romance.
In comparing all the different settings, Royal Holiday and The Tourist Attraction both are set in picturesque places, Alaska and the UK. The Tourist Attraction and Three Dark Crowns both are set in semi-rural locations as TTA is set in a small town and TDC is on an island. Now One Last Stop is set in busy New York, so it is the opposite of the more relaxed TTA setting. War Storm is the outlier in a way as it is it’s own world with multiple subkingdoms.
The novels have very different writing styles, but that is also due to my four recent reads being my second (or later) novel by that author. While I have read more by Sarah Morgenthaler in the later novels in the series, The Tourist Attraction was my first.
All the stories share an “uncertain future” plot for its characters. Two of them, The Tourist Attraction and Royal Holiday, are both where the main characters find a possible new future on their vacation. One Last Stop is where a character moves to a new location to find a possible new life. War Storm and Three Dark Crowns are both series where the characters all have an uncertain future with wars, betrayals, and secrets.
Although my four recent reads each have their positives and negatives, I think I would choose The Tourist Attraction as my favorite from the set.
Have you read any of these books? What did you think? What book were you reading this time last year and how does it compare to your current read?
