Last Year I Was Reading is hosted by Maria @ ReadingMaria. Every Thursday (or whichever day you choose), take your current read and compare it to what you were reading this exact time last year.
- Which one do you like better?
- What is different about the books?
- Any special facts/things you want to make note of or bring attention to?
Last year, I read/reviewed The Boy is Back (Boy #4) on August 19th.
Today, I read and reviewed one novel from my backlog, Half Sick of Shadows.
Last year, I read and reviewed The Boy is Back which is the fourth novel in the Boy series. This year I read and reviewed Half Sick of Shadows, which is a standalone novel. Both novels fall under the “adult” category compared to the “YA” one.
Boy is a contemporary novel whereas Shadows is a historical fantasy, although the themes read similar to a contemporary novel. The formatting of the two novels is vastly different as Boy is a mixed media novel and told through everything from text messages to emails. It is also told in a single present timeline with references to the past and future through the writing. On the other hand, Shadows includes multiple scenes in the past and future with the main story taking place in the present.
There are romances and familial relationships explored in each novel as well as the concept of found family, although it is more apparent in Shadows compared to Boy. Both have character growth and interesting dynamics between the characters. There are multiple unknowns in each novel as Boy has the mystery of the characters moving forward from their past and Shadows has a mysterious path towards a semi-known future.
For choosing one novel as a favorite, I am on the fence between both of them. They each were interesting in their own way. Although I actually rated Boy a little higher than Shadows, I think I would chose Shadows for the most reread potential.
Have you read any of these books? What did you think? What book were you reading this time last year and how does it compare to your current read?
