Last Year I Was Reading is hosted by Maria @ ReadingMaria. Every Thursday (or whichever day you choose), take your current read and compare it to what you were reading this exact time last year.
- Which one do you like better?
- What is different about the books?
- Any special facts/things you want to make note of or bring attention to?
Last year, I did not read/review anything exactly on August 26th. I did read/review The Switch on August 27th.
Today, I read and reviewed one novel from my backlog, Small Favors.
Both Small Favors and The Switch are standalone novels. Each were published in the year I read them as The Switch was published in 2020 and Small Favors was published in 2021. I also listened to both novels in audiobook form compared to the physical (ebook/paperback) version.
Small Favors can be classified as a young adult fantasy novel, while The Switch is classified as an adult contemporary. Both novels contain a large cast of characters. Small Favors essentially features the entire town of Amity Falls while The Switch contains the entire small town in Yorkshire and multiple characters in London. The Switch contains a duel-perspective with two main characters, Leena and her grandmother, Eileen, while Small Favors is told solely though the perspective of the main character, Ellerie.
There is a lot of character growth in both novels that are done in completely different ways. In The Switch, the characters gain new perspectives by changing their locations whereas the location remains static in Small Favors and the circumstances change. Both stories also contain romances that are done in completely different ways. Even the two romances in The Switch are unique to each character.
For choosing one novel as a favorite, I am on the fence between both of them. They each were interesting in their own way. I think I would choose The Switch as there are some pieces in Small Favors that seem unfinished, even though it was a very interesting novel.
Have you read any of these books? What did you think? What book were you reading this time last year and how does it compare to your current read?
