~ First Lines Friday – #13 (August 27, 2021) ~

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words.

What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

“There are monsters in the world.

There are monsters in the woods.

They slip inside at night. Crawl through the walls of our cottage. They find their way into my brother’s dreams.”

Do you recognize the lines?

Hint: This is the first novel in a new gothic fantasy series that will be published in September 2021.

Hint 2: It has a sequel due to publication in September 2022.

This week’s book is:

Lakesedge (World at the Lake’s Edge #1) by Lyndall Clipstone!

Expected Publication: September 28th 2021, 400 pages

There are monsters in the world.

When Violeta Graceling arrives at haunted Lakesedge estate, she expects to find a monster. She knows the terrifying rumours about Rowan Sylvanan, who drowned his entire family when he was a boy. But neither the estate nor the monster are what they seem.

There are monsters in the woods.

As Leta falls for Rowan, she discovers he is bound to the Lord Under, the sinister death god lurking in the black waters of the lake. A creature to whom Leta is inexplicably drawn…

There’s a monster in the shadows, and now it knows my name.

To save Rowan, and herself, Leta must confront the darkness in her past, which includes unravelling the mystery of her connection to the Lord Under.

There are actually three covers for this novel and it is difficult to choose which one is my favorite. For the novel itself, I am nervous about starting it as it is always difficult waiting for a sequel; however, the novel sounds very interesting and unique. I love the gothic edge that the synopsis gives for the monsters and how they will fit in with the main character. The first lines definitely got me interested in this novel as there was so much more to type if I wanted to expand this post. I hope the novel ends as well as it begins as the first lines definitely hooked me in this instance.

  • Have you read Lakesedge or is it on your TBR?
  • What did you think of the first lines?
