Last Year I Was Reading is hosted by Maria @ ReadingMaria. Every Thursday (or whichever day you choose), take your current read and compare it to what you were reading this exact time last year.
- Which one do you like better?
- What is different about the books?
- Any special facts/things you want to make note of or bring attention to?

Last year, I did not read/review anything exactly on September 9th. I read/reviewed Everything is Fine yesterday on September 8th and The Holiday Detour on September 10th.

Today, I read and reviewed Under the Whispering Door, an ARC novel.

To start with an easy comparison, all three novels are contemporary and are set in the modern everyday world. Now, The Holiday Detour and Everything is Fine follows reality, Under the Whispering Door includes a hint of fantasy within the real world.
All of them are standalones and two of them include LGBTQIP+ main characters and romances. All of the romances in each story are slow-burns as there may be some initial attraction, but the characters work through multiple obstacles before a relationship is possible. Another similarity between all three novels is all of them include the main characters going through a change in their life. Each change is unique to each story, but all of them are faced with something unexpected and must work through it in order to find a happier option.
For choosing one novel as a favorite, all of them were great reads. While I may re-read Everything is Fine, I do not think I would take the time to read The Holiday Detour again. It was not a bad read, but it just was not a favorite of mine. On the other hand, Under the Whispering Door is a novel I would easily re-read, which makes it my top novel of the three reads.
Have you read any of these books? What did you think? What book were you reading this time last year and how does it compare to your current read?
