~ #BookBloggerHop: Least Favorite Character Types ~

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blog.

Question

What is your least favorite type of character to read about? (submitted by Julie @ JadeSky)

Answer

My least favorite characters are those that are self-centered/selfish. When characters ignore the needs of others or they shut out others (or something else), then it affects my ability to enjoy the story. This happens a lot in stories where a character develops a sort-of “hero complex” where they think it is up to only them to defeat any evil.

However, I do not mind it when characters start this way as long as they grow throughout the novel or series. Characters in stories typically grow in some way, which are ones that I enjoy a lot. If a character ends up the exact same at the end and are the same character the reader met at the beginning, then it typically does not end up a novel/series that I would ever considering rereading or recommending to others.

How about you? What are your least favorite character types?
