Last Year I Was Reading is hosted by Maria @ ReadingMaria. Every Thursday (or whichever day you choose), take your current read and compare it to what you were reading this exact time last year.
- Which one do you like better?
- What is different about the books?
- Any special facts/things you want to make note of or bring attention to?
Last year, I read/reviewed Beach House for Rent (Beach House #4) on August 5th.
Today, I read and reviewed two novels, one is for a blog tour, Escape to Hummingbird Hotel (Hummingbird Hotel #1), and the other is an ARC, The Curse of the Crow (Wicked Kingdoms #1).
The easiest comparison is all three novels are parts of a series. My reads from this year are the first ones, whereas my novel from last year is the fourth novel. However, as I did not read the first three novels in the Beach House series, Beach House for Rent, was actually my introduction into the series.
Similar to last week, Beach House for Rent was a back-log title as it was released in 2017. My two novels from this year are both new releases that were published in 2021.
Escape to the Hummingbird Hotel and Beach House for Rent include main characters that relocate to somewhere unfamiliar where they go through a journey of self-discovery and fall under a women’s fiction type genre. While The Curse of the Crow is a fantasy/paranormal novel, it does have the main character going through a journey of self-discovery in an unfamiliar place.
All three novels contain a romance element where the love interests meet in the novel and develop a relationship with each other. All are slow-burn as the main characters may have an attraction to their love interest, but all of the potential couples get to know the other before taking the next step into forming any type of romantic connection.
Beach House for Rent and Hummingbird Hotel are both contemporary novels set around the world. Beach House is set in the United States and Hummingbird takes place in both the UK and Greece. On the other hand, Crow is set in a fictional land in a fantasy genre setting.
For choosing one novel as a favorite, I am on the fence between all of them. Beach House was an excellent novel and I still need to get around to reading more from the series. As Hummingbird Hotel and Curse of the Crow are both the first novels in their respective series, it is difficult to fully pick between them. Based on my ratings alone, my choice would be Hummingbird Hotel; however, I would easily read all three again and I want to further explore each series.
Have you read any of these books? What did you think? What book were you reading this time last year and how does it compare to your current read?
