Last Year I Was Reading is hosted by Maria @ ReadingMaria. Every Thursday (or whichever day you choose), take your current read and compare it to what you were reading this exact time last year.
- Which one do you like better?
- What is different about the books?
- Any special facts/things you want to make note of or bring attention to?
For June, I am giving this new meme a try. I am temporarily putting a hold on my TBR Clean-up posts as it was difficult trying to go through and decide which books to toss. Since I love to do memes, I searched for some Thursday ones. This meme seemed to be interesting, so I decided to give a try this month. If it works, then I’ll work more with the formatting to make this post a more permanent fixture on my blog.
I read and reviewed this novel on June17, 2020. This is the first novel in the Goddess War series.
Brambles is the prequel novella to Thorn and The Bone Knife is the prequel novella to The Theft of Sunlight. All the novels are a part of the Dauntless Path series. I read and reviewed both prequel novellas today and plan to move on to the next book soon.
Another novel that I started is A Second-Hand Husband as I will participate in a blog tour and post my review for this tomorrow.
When I saw that my last year’s read was Antigoddess, I was reminded that I still need to finish this series, so I had intentions to start novels two and three. Unfortunately, other novels came up first, so the rest of the Goddess War series is still on my TBR.
On the surface, Antigoddess and A Second-Hand Husband do not have much in common, however, they do have a few similarities. Both novels are set in modern times in the contemporary world. While the romance is not the main feature of Antigoddess, there is a small subplot in the novel. On the other hand, A Second-Hand Husband is mainly a romance with other genres as subplots.
Brambles and The Bone Knife along with Antigoddess are both introductions to stories. While Brambles and The Bone Knife are novellas, they both serve as introductions to the main characters of their follow-up stories. Antigoddess is also an introduction novel, however, it is the full length first story in the the Goddess War triology. All three stories are fantasy novels using known facts, Antigoddess uses mythology whereas Brambles sets up a retelling of The Goose Girl.
As Brambles and The Bone Knife are both novellas, it is difficult to compare them to Antigoddess and A Second-Hand Husband. Overall, I prefer the Dauntless series to the Goddess War one, but I think I need to read more to actually have a more fair comparison. Now comparing the two full-length novels, Antigoddess and A Second-Hand Husband, I currently prefer Antigoddess, but those initial thoughts might change after I finish the Husband novel.
Have you read any of these books? What did you think? What book were you reading this time last year and how does it compare to your current read?
